The Orlando Magic’s youth movement may soon come at the expense of one of the franchise’s longest-tenured players.
According to reports, league expectation is that Orlando will waive veteran forward Jonathan Isaac and stretch the remaining money on his contract rather than use him as a trade asset. The move would provide the Magic with additional financial flexibility as Paolo Banchero’s lucrative contract extension begins to impact the team’s salary structure.
Isaac, once viewed as a cornerstone defensive piece for the franchise, has struggled to maintain consistent availability throughout his career due to injuries. When healthy, the former first-round pick has remained one of the league’s most versatile defenders, capable of guarding multiple positions and disrupting opposing offenses with his length and athleticism.
However, Orlando’s roster has evolved significantly in recent years. Banchero has emerged as the face of the franchise, while the Magic continue building around a young core that includes Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs.
While Isaac’s contract could theoretically be used as salary ballast in a trade, reports suggest that moving him in a deal could ultimately limit Orlando’s cap flexibility. As a result, stretching the contract appears to be the preferred route.
Should the move become official, Isaac would immediately become one of the more intriguing veteran defenders available on the market. Contending teams searching for frontcourt depth and defensive versatility could show interest in the 28-year-old.
For Orlando, the decision would represent another step in the franchise’s transition from rebuilding project to a team focused on maximizing its championship window around Banchero and its young core.
